1. Proyecto final paso a paso: diario del curso


This unit is mainly designed for 1º course of GIA from Tourism Job Trainning Family. There are 24 pupils.
Subject: Protocol
Teacher: María Jesús Godoy García

Title of the Unit: "You'd better place the flag in..."

The learning outcomes are:
-To know the concept of protocol, its origin and evolution.
-Analyse the importance of the protocol and its consequences in official acts.
- To value the importance of the protocol for a tourism business.

- To distinguish different kind of protocol acts and the correct position of the flag in this acts

This unit has got an important amount of specific contents such as,

- Definition of protocol. Basic concepts.
- Origin and evolution of national and international protoco.
- The importance of the protocol in the tourism sector.
- Kind of protocol and basic rules.


- Order of flags. Kind of flags.

Some important final tasks should be done correctly. Pupils will receive the information needed to solve those tasks. 


- To place properly official flags.


- To organize property an international meeting between two important international tourism companies and their tourism ministers.

To let pupils get this final task, we will work different activities that allow an appropriate scaffolding in different ways. For more than 5 lessons, they will work different activities to let them get the objectives of the unit.

Lesson 1.

We will teach these contents.
- Definition of protocol. Basic concepts.
- Origin and evolution of national and international protocol.

We watch this video and make some questions to put in common the main ideas.

Write what official flags could be placed in this chart respecting our national flag protocol.

Explain the theoritical content about:

We have a first contact about this content:
- Kind of protocol and basic rules.



Place in a triple play of flags, the one that represents the flag of Extremadura.

Lesson 4.
Study the importance and the vocabulary of the flag ans its protocol.

- Order of flags. Kind of flags.

Place the flag of Extremadura on the stage with the official flag of a company, for example NH.. In the middle, a presidential table can be found.

Lesson 5. 

Use of a writingframe and some activity to prepare the final task and the exam.

Could we see a flag compositions in which the flag of the “Diputación de Cáceres“ can be found?

Study the importance of the protocol for an international flag. A study case.

PROPER DISPLAY OF THE FLAG
If flown from a flagpole, its blue field on top in time of peace and the red field on top in time of war;

If in a hanging position, the blue field shall be to the left (observer's point of view) in time of peace, and the
red field to the left (observer's point of view) in time of war. If in a hanging position, the blue field shall be
to the left (observer's point of view) in time of peace, and the red field to the left (observer's point of view)
in time of war.

The National flag shall be displayed in all public buildings, official residences, public plazas, and institutions
of everyday learning throughout the year.
It shall be permanently hoisted, day and night, throughout the year, in front of the following:
Malacañang Palace;
Congress of the Philippines building;
Supreme Court building;
Rizal Monument in Luneta;
Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan City;
Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit;
Barasoain Church Historical Landmark in Malolos City;
Marcela Agoncillo Historical Landmarkl in Taal;
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier;
Libingan ng mga Bayani in Makati City;
Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion in N.Cemetery;
and all International Ports of entry.
*The National Flag of these sites shall be properly illuminated at night.

If planted on the ground, the flagpole shall be at a prominent place and shall be of such height as would
give the National Flag commanding position in relation to the buildings in the vicinity. The flagpole must not
be of equal height or higher than the Independence Flagpole at the Rizal Park, Manila (107ft).
When the National Flag is flown with flag or flags of other countries, the flags must be of equal size and on
separate staffs of the same height. The National Flag shall be hoisted first and lowered last.When displayed in a row of house flags, the National Flag shall be in front of the center of the line or on the
left (observer's point of view) of the row. The house flags should be arranged in alphabetical order, by
precedence or by protocol order from left to right (the observer's point of view).

When displayed in a row or in a parade with flags of other countries, the National Flag shall be on the left
(observer's point of view) of the other flags. The flags of other countries should be arranged in alphabetical
order from left to right.

When in a parade with house flags, the National Flag shall be in front of the center of the first line. The
house flags should be arranged in alphabetical order, by precedence or by protocol order from left to right
(the observer's point of view).

When displayed in a semi-circle of flags with other countries or house flags, the National Flag should be at
the center.

When displayed in a circle of flags with other countries or house flags, the National Flag should be flown on
the flagpole facing the main road (point of reference- Kilometer 0, Rizal Park, Manila); or in front of a
monument; or the main entrance of the building.

If the National Flag is displayed indoors on a flagpole, it shall be placed at the left of the observer as one
enters the room or flat against the wall;

From the top of a flagpole, which shall be at a prominent place or a commanding position in relation to the
surrounding buildings.
In a suspended position from a rope extending from a building to a pole erected away from the building;

Secondly, crucial information will be given from different ways following VAK approach.

With a presentation, the main points will be given to let them prepare the final task.



Lesson 6.

Explain the main concepts and do the final task.


We have to take into account, that pupils need to acquire language as a consequence of learning contents. To let them do it we will suggest working with this specific vocabulary:

Nouns: customs, protocol, etiquette, label, shield, crest, heraldry, rules, supporter, escutcheon, motto, order, flagpole, row, semi-circle, flag, rope, observer...

Verbs: describe, distinguish, concede, flow, hang, display, plant, hoist, arrange, place...

Adjectives: strict, senior, local, historical, open, perfect, prominent, commanding position, alphabetical...

The structures that are to be worked will be:

Passive voice

While we are working and learning, some discourse type will be needed, for instance:

- Exposición. The discourse is based on clear and concise explanations, using visual information to transmit the message.

- Descripción y exposición.

- Argumentación.


Although in our classes all language skills are going to be encouraged, we will mainly focus on:

Reading:worksheets.

Speaking; explaining information of the final project

Listening.: youtube video.




It is important for pupils to know that all these contents have got an important cultural and context element:
The importance of symbol in different part of the world and how authorities manage protocolly its official acts.

They will need to develop some important cognitive processes:

- To analyse the basic aspects of the situation of a protocol act.

- To apply the basic rules of managing the position of the flags to a national and international protocol


Last of all, we will have to check if the correct knowledge was got. We have some criteria and evaluation instruments to do it:

-To know the concept of protocol and value its origin.

-Analyse the importance of the protocol and its consequences in official acts focussing in the relationship between companies and countries.

- To value the importance of the protocol for a tourism bussiness.

- To distinguish different kind of protocol acts and the correct position of the flag in this acts.
